While we are heavily into our addictions, we often do not take good care of ourselves. Simple things like getting good sleep, proper nutrition, and personal hygiene often go by the waist side. Therefore, when we start the recovery process taking a good care of our bodies is crucial to a successful sober time.
I know this often seems like the last thing on our minds.
For many of us, taking care of ourselves seems like a foreign concept. After all, you may believe that other issues at hand need more attention. You may feel that if you took care of yourself then you are selfish and abandoning all of your responsibilities. However if you had a broken leg, you would have to take the time to heal, and if you neglects your healing process your recovery would take longer and be more difficult. Getting sober is the same. We have to take the time to take good care of ourselves!
The truth is that if we do not take good care of ourselves than we are of no use to others. I had to realize that I was not a bad person or a bad mother if I did so, I was a sick person and that I needed to get well! If I had a broken leg, I would have to take the time to heal, getting sober is the same. I had to take care of me, so that I was well and able to take care of others!
So today, sobriety is my priority! It has to be. I go out of my way to make sure that I am diligent with my recovery and that I take care of me. I know if I do not I will end up drinking again. If I drink again I will lose everything. However, if I take the time to put the effort into working on my sobriety, every single day, I know that it ultimately will benefit everybody!
How do you take care of yourself?
